English
Event study on SBTi commitment and validated-target announcements among global listed firms. Investors react positively to initial commitment but negatively to subsequent validated-target disclosure, concentrated in firms whose targets look unrealistic given financial constraints, governance quality, and carbon management experience. Validation is priced as credible only when corroborated by execution capacity.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Directly informs the design of mandatory climate assurance under ISSB IFRS S2, AASB phased assurance, and SBTi's Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 Assurance Model. It suggests assurance and validation regimes must be paired with credible execution evidence to be priced by markets, a key lesson for global disclosure policy.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Using engagement with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), this study asks whether capital markets treat third-party validation of corporate climate targets as credible information for decision making. This is a question of direct relevance to accounting and public policy debates now shaping mandatory climate assurance regimes including the ISSB's IFRS S2, the AASB's phased assurance requirements, and the SBTi's own Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 Assurance Model. Using a global sample of listed firms that are publicly committed to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), of which two thirds subsequently disclosed specific, validated targets, we conduct an event study around both announcement stages. While investors react positively to the initial announcement of SBT commitment, the subsequent disclosure of validated targets triggers a negative reaction, concentrated among firms whose targets appear overly unrealistic relative to their existing capacity, captured by financial constraints, governance quality, and carbon management experience. This pattern is not explained by mechanical mean reversion, generic greenwashing discounting, or an ESG “fatigue” view, and supports a channel of capacity, in which validation is priced as credible only when corroborated by firms' ability to execute.
