English
This study assesses whether green hydrogen can realistically power nickel smelters on Obi Island, Indonesia, replacing 2.3 GW of captive coal. Meeting 15.1 TWh/yr at 55% hydrogen-fired efficiency requires ~0.82 Mt of hydrogen and ~45–52 TWh of renewable electricity, far exceeding Indonesia's current renewable plans. Inter-island hydrogen transport adds further barriers, so green hydrogen is judged impractical near- to medium-term; a staged strategy of phased renewables, efficiency gains, and transitional options is recommended.

In the global GX context
Adds a hard-nosed quantitative reality check to the global green-hydrogen-for-industry narrative, relevant to transition finance and scope 3 supply-chain decarbonization for critical minerals. It illustrates how renewable resource constraints and transport losses shape credible corporate transition plans under ISSB/TCFD disclosure.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Nickel smelting on Obi Island, North Maluku, relies on captive coal power and faces pressure to decarbonize. Green hydrogen is a proposed low carbon alternative by Government of Indonesia, but its feasibility depends on renewable energy availability, system efficiency, and hydrogen transport. This study asks whether green hydrogen can realistically supply electricity to these smelters. It combines three elements: a bottom-up energy-balance calculation, alignment with Indonesia's renewable energy planning, and a qualitative screening of inter-island supply chain options (liquid hydrogen, ammonia as a hydrogen carrier, and direct renewable or hybrid alternatives). Replacing 2.3 GW of coal capacity at a 75% capacity factor requires about 15.1 TWh of electricity annually. With 55% efficiency for hydrogen-fired generation, this equals about 0.82 million tonnes of hydrogen, requiring about 45 TWh of renewable electricity for electrolysis and roughly 52 TWh including liquefaction and conditioning. This demand is large compared with Indonesia's current renewable expansion plans, and inter-island hydrogen transport adds infrastructure, energy loss, and readiness challenges. Green hydrogen is therefore unlikely practical for Obi in the near or medium term. A staged strategy combining phased renewable deployment, efficiency improvement, and transitional low-carbon options appears more feasible, with green hydrogen as a conditional long-term option.
