English

This study compares the EROI of photovoltaic, wind, hydropower, and geothermal energy across EU27. Only 8 countries have an optimum renewable strategy where the highest-EROI technology also has the largest share. 23 countries can meet current electricity demand while maintaining a minimum EROI of ~15:1, but four cannot, supporting the need for collaborative energy transition and societal downscaling.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

EROI is a critical metric for the global energy transition. This paper provides a country-level EROI analysis for EU27, offering a replicable methodology for other regions. The finding that some countries cannot sustain the minimum EROI alone underscores the importance of cross-border cooperation and demand-side measures in achieving decarbonization.

The EROI comparison methodology and country-level results provide a benchmark for further studies on renewable energy system efficiency.

Utility and energy planners can use the EROI ranking to prioritize high-return technologies in their renewable energy portfolios.

Policymakers should consider EROI alongside cost and capacity when designing renewable energy strategies, and recognize the need for regional collaboration and potential demand reduction.

📄 Abstract(原文)

To sustain modern society, the energy sector must maintain an Energy Return On Investment (EROI) ratio of ~15:1. With the imminent switch to renewable energy, this paper compares the EROI of photovoltaic, concentrated solar power, wind, hydropower, and geothermal energy for all European Union countries (EU27). The results show that only 8 countries currently have what could be described as an “optimum” renewable energy strategy – i.e., where the technology with the highest EROI and highest energy generation potential has the largest share of total renewable energy generation. More positively, 23 countries can produce their current electricity demand through renewable technologies whilst also maintaining the minimum EROI (~15:1). Notably, this entails that four countries are unable to do so – lending some support to the need for a collaborative approach in our energy transition and the necessity to “downscale” modern societies so that they can operate within their ecological ceiling.
