English
This study reframes CCUS as the foundational enabler for sustainable shale oil development in Venezuela's La Luna Formation. CO2 huff-and-puff can recover ~21% of shale oil, and CO2 fracturing yields 234% greater cumulative gas production over five years versus slickwater. It offers an integrated workflow addressing water scarcity, production optimization, and permanent CO2 storage simultaneously.

In the global GX context
The paper contributes to global CCUS scholarship by framing CO2-EOR and storage as an integrated development strategy rather than an add-on, relevant to transition finance debates on whether hydrocarbon expansion can be reconciled with emissions management. It also illustrates the emerging nexus of CCUS and unconventional resource development in emerging economies.

📄 Abstract(原文)
While unconventional shale development has transformed global energy markets, Venezuela's vast potential, particularly in the prolific La Luna Formation of the Maracaibo Basin, remains entirely untapped. This paper transcends a traditional resource assessment to propose a paradigm shift: investigating the synergistic potential of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) not just as an emissions mitigation tool, but as the primary enabler for the sustainable fracturing and production of high-value hydrocarbons from Venezuelan shale reservoirs. This study employs a rigorous, multi-stage technical evaluation. First, we synthesize a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of the La Luna Formation, integrating official reserves data with critical reservoir characteristics including structural geology, petrophysical properties (porosity, permeability, TOC), and detailed geochemical characterization. Second, we critically analyze current hydraulic fracturing techniques, specifically comparing the environmental and operational drawbacks of conventional water-based methods against the potential advantages of waterless alternatives. The core of our methodology involves a detailed exploration of CO2-based applications. This includes evaluating CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), its use as an energizing fracturing fluid, and the assessment of the reservoir's capacity for long-term, secure CO2 storage. Our analysis confirms that the La Luna Formation possesses world-class source rock properties, making it the premier shale oil prospect in Venezuela and a strategic asset. The CO2 huff and puff technique follows three main stages: CO2 injection, soaking, and production. During injection, CO2 rapidly enters pores due to its higher diffusion coefficient (1.86 times that of methane). In the soaking stage, strong CO2-calcite interactions lead to preferential adsorption of CO2 on pore walls, displacing hydrocarbons through competitive adsorption. During production, oil and CO2 are driven by pressure gradient and diffusion. This process can recover approximately 21% of shale oil, with recovery rates following methane > n-octane > asphalt. The high-quality, light crude oil from the La Luna Formation is ideally suited for domestic refining and, critically, as a much-needed diluent for the country's extra-heavy oil production from the Orinoco Oil Belt, creating an immediate and synergistic value stream. We conclude that CO2-based fracturing presents a transformative opportunity. Its benefits extend beyond eliminating massive water usage and associated environmental risks; it offers the potential for enhanced oil recovery through miscible mechanisms and provides a permanent sequestration site for industrial CO2 emissions. Comparative analysis demonstrates that CO2 fracturing can yield substantially higher production, with gas rates 510% higher and cumulative gas production 234% greater over a five-year period compared to slickwater, largely attributed to elimination of water blockage effects. The paper identifies and outlines the critical parameters for future evaluation, including CO2 adsorption/desorption kinetics in shale, complex multi-phase flow dynamics, potential geochemical reactions, and the imperative of maintaining caprock integrity to ensure safe, long-term storage. This paper delivers a first-of-its-kind, integrated workflow for the sustainable exploitation of Venezuela's underexplored unconventional resources. Its novelty lies in framing CCUS not as an afterthought, but as the foundational technology that simultaneously addresses the critical challenges of water scarcity, production optimization, and emissions management. By connecting the development of light shale oil to the needs of the extra-heavy oil sector, it presents a compelling and holistic roadmap for revitalizing Venezuela's hydrocarbon industry in a responsible and innovative manner.
