English

This critical review examines operational energy cost modeling for tropical hotels, where cooling, hot water, and lighting dominate energy use. Screening 236 records, 48 studies were analyzed, covering simulation tools (EnergyPlus, TRNSYS), machine learning, and techno-economic models for renewables. A hybrid framework integrating climate-responsive design, behavioral scenarios, and policy is proposed. Gaps include proprietary data limits and lack of staff behavior quantification. Future work should use anonymized datasets and field experiments.

In the global GX context

Globally, the hospitality sector faces pressure to align with TCFD and CSRD disclosures. This review provides a framework for integrating energy modeling with policy scenarios, aiding hotels in setting science-based targets and reporting energy performance, especially in tropical regions where cooling loads are high.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The main energy consumers in tropical hotels are cooling, hot water, and electric power for lighting, all of which depend on climatic conditions, occupancy, and management. However, many areas lack a clear definition of cost. This review aims to appraise the current state of operational energy cost modeling for hotels in the tropics and clarify its main contribution: an integrated, policy-responsive framework. We used a critical review approach to screen 236 records and identified 48 studies on hotel energy use, models, economic analysis, occupant behavior, and associated policies. We extracted data on climate context, model type (EnergyPlus, TRNSYS, Modelica, or machine learning), cost metrics, and behavioral elements. The article explains hybrid modeling: climate-specific baselines are established by simulations, hypothetical scenarios are tested by machine learning software, and techno-economic models assess the viability of renewable resources. Nevertheless, proprietary data restrictions limit empirical support, and few studies quantify staff behavior regarding CSR. A hypothetical framework for the relationship between climate-responsive design, hybrid simulation, economic modules, and behavior-policy scenarios for a tropical hotel is presented. Future research should incorporate anonymized datasets, field experiments that combine technical and behavioral interventions, and accessible repositories of surrogate models to improve operational energy-cost models for tropical hotels.
