English

This study quantifies how using recycled aluminum frames, glass, and silicon reduces the carbon footprint of bifacial glass-glass PV modules. Virgin-material modules emit 351.64 kgCO2-eq per kWp, while recycled content cuts this by 13.9–22.9%. It finds Ecoinvent 3.9 overestimates footprint by ~50% due to outdated electricity factors and neglected circularity, and recommends dynamic emission-factor databases, blockchain-based recycling data platforms, and international mutual recognition of carbon accounting.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As the EU, France, and South Korea use PV carbon footprint as a market-access standard, this paper directly engages global disclosure debates on methodology harmonization and data quality. Its critique of static LCA databases (Ecoinvent) and call for mutual recognition of recycled-material accounting speaks to CBAM-style product rules and ISSB Scope 3 data reliability.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Several countries, such as France, the European Union and South Korea, use carbon footprint of photovoltaic (PV) as the market access standards. Recycling enables the recycled materials to bear only the emissions from reprocessing, avoiding carbon emissions from raw material extraction, thereby significantly reducing the carbon footprint of products. This study focuses on bifacial glass-glass PV modules, selecting three kinds of recyclable materials: aluminum frames, glass, and silicon materials. Using the cut-off method, the carbon footprint of PV modules made from virgin materials was calculated, which comparing with the PV modules made from recycled materials. The carbon reduction effect of recycling was quantified. The results indicate that under the primary material pathway, the carbon footprint of a 1 kWp PV module is 351.64 kgCO2-eq, with silicon wafers, aluminum frames and glass being the main contributors. Using 85% recycled aluminum +30% recycled glass +10% recycled silicon, reduces the footprint to 303.17 kgCO2-eq, an 13.9% decrease. If the recycled content is increased to 100% recycled aluminum+50% recycled glass+30% recycled silicon , the reduction reaches 22.9%. Comparing our results, based on China’s electricity factor (0.6205 kgCO2-eq/kWh) and supply chain primary data, with an international static database (Ecoinvent 3.9) shows that the latter overestimates the carbon footprint by ~50% due to outdated electricity factors, misaligned technological representation, and neglect of circularity effects. Based on the aforementioned research findings, this paper recommends that enterprises prioritize the recycling of materials with high carbon intensity and develop data collection capabilities for recycled materials. For government authorities, it proposes establishing a dynamic database for carbon emission factors of recycled materials, building a data management platform for recycling material based on blockchain technology, and promoting the international mutual recognition of carbon accounting methods and related data for recycled materials. These recommendations aim to provide insights for China’s PV industry to address international carbon footprint barriers.
