English

Construction's Scope 3 emissions occur largely outside organizational boundaries across fragmented supply chains, making them hard to identify and manage. A survey of 100 construction professionals using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis found moderate awareness of upstream hotspots but a significant gap between awareness and systematic measurement/management. The study calls for integrating Scope 3 monitoring into supply chain governance to cut overall carbon impacts.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD and TCFD-aligned disclosure push Scope 3 into mandatory reporting, this study offers empirical evidence from construction—a hard-to-abate sector—on the awareness-implementation gap. It reinforces that supply chain governance, not just measurement, is the bottleneck for global Scope 3 management.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The construction sector is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, largely due to carbon-intensive materials, complex supply chains, and energy-intensive processes. A substantial share of these emissions occurs outside organizational boundaries as Scope 3 emissions, which remain difficult to identify and manage due to fragmented, multi-stakeholder supply chains. Drawing on organizational sustainability theory, this study examines the role of Scope 3 emissions in construction supply chains and their impact on sustainability efforts. A quantitative approach was adopted using a structured questionnaire administered to construction professionals. Analysis of 100 responses using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis revealed a moderate awareness of Scope 3 emissions and identification of upstream emission hotspots. However, a significant gap exists between awareness and the implementation of systematic measurement and management practices. The findings highlight the need for construction organizations to integrate Scope 3 emissions monitoring into supply chain governance to enhance sustainability and reduce overall carbon impacts.
