English

This review examines converting microplastics into functional carbon materials via pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, catalytic carbonization, microwave, flash Joule heating, and plasma, yielding porous carbons, activated carbons, graphene-like materials, CNTs, and carbon dots for adsorption, photocatalysis, CO₂ capture, and electrochemical treatment. It critically assesses feedstock heterogeneity, additives, halogenated polymers, energy demand, chemical activation, contaminant transfer, and material safety, and proposes a circular 'recover-convert-remediate-regenerate' framework integrating selective recovery, low-energy conversion, safer activation, multifunctional remediation, AI-assisted materials design, and circular LCA.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

While plastic circularity is increasingly relevant to CSRD and circular-economy disclosure, this materials-science review offers limited direct linkage to TCFD/ISSB climate disclosure; its LCA and circularity framing may inform broader sustainability reporting.

👥 読者別の含意

🔬研究者:Provides a comprehensive overview of microplastic-to-carbon conversion routes and property relationships, highlighting research gaps in feedstock heterogeneity and safe activation.

🏢実務担当者:Offers insight into potential waste-to-material pathways for plastic waste, though direct disclosure or compliance applications are limited.

🏛政策担当者:Suggests a circular management framework for microplastics that could inform waste and circular-economy policy, but lacks direct climate disclosure implications.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Microplastic pollution is a persistent environmental challenge due to the widespread distribution, chemical stability, and continuous generation of polymeric particles smaller than 5 mm.Instead of relying only on separation, filtration, or destruction, microplastics can be considered carbon-rich secondary feedstocks for producing functional carbon materials, linking plastic-waste management with green chemistry and circular-economy principles.Technologies such as pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, catalytic carbonization, microwave processing, flash Joule heating, and plasma conversion can transform polymeric waste into porous carbons, activated carbons, graphene-like materials, carbon nanotubes, and carbon dots for applications in adsorption, photocatalysis, advanced oxidation, CO₂ capture, and electrochemical treatment. However, feedstock heterogeneity, additives, halogen-containing polymers, energy demand, chemical activation, contaminant transfer, and material safety remain important challenges. This review critically examines microplastic-to-carbon conversion, polymer-carbon property relationships, environmental applications, regeneration, end-of-life management, and life-cycle assessment.A future framework integrating selective recovery, low-energy conversion, safer activation, multifunctional remediation, AI-assisted materials design, and circular life-cycle assessment is proposed to shift microplastic management from a linear "capture-and-dispose" model toward a circular "recover-convert-remediate-regenerate" strategy.
