English
A game-theoretic study of how mitigation and R&D cooperation interact in international environmental agreements. Linking technological cooperation to mitigation sustains large, stable coalitions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, technological spillovers raise welfare without shrinking coalition size; gains come mainly from coalition expansion, not higher R&D investment.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Speaks to the design of international climate cooperation architecture (Article 6, technology transfer mechanisms) and offers theory on why linking R&D cooperation to mitigation pledges can stabilize participation — relevant to ISSB-era debates on credible national transition commitments.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Mitigation and research and development (R&D) cooperation are central to international environmental agreements. However, their interaction in long-term self-enforcing settings remains unclear. We examine joint mitigation and R&D in an infinitely repeated game and characterize weakly renegotiation-proof equilibria. Linking technological cooperation to mitigation sustains large and stable coalitions. Contrary to the conventional view that technological spillovers weaken cooperation, spillovers increase welfare without reducing coalition size. Moreover, welfare gains come primarily from coalition expansion rather than high R&D investment. Numerical simulations illustrate how cooperative and unilateral R&D arrangements affect stability and efficiency.
