This review compares four food waste management strategies—animal feed, landfill disposal, aerobic composting, and anaerobic digestion with digestate application or solid-fraction composting—using carbon balance analysis. Integrating anaerobic digestion with solid-fraction composting achieves the highest resource recovery and carbon conversion, yielding stable humic-enriched organic fertilizer. Labile, humic, and resistant carbon fractions are shown to govern agronomic properties of the products.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This study presents an assessment of food waste management strategies with a focus on resource recovery and carbon transformation. Four approaches were considered: direct use as animal feed, uncontrolled disposal at landfills, aerobic composting, and anaerobic digestion with either direct application of digestate or subsequent composting of its solid fraction. The effectiveness of each strategy was evaluated using carbon balance analysis combined with literature data on carbon forms in biodegradation products. The results indicate that the highest degree of food waste utilization and carbon conversion is achieved through the integration of anaerobic digestion with composting of the solid fraction of digestate, resulting in a stable organic fertilizer enriched with humic substances. Direct application of digestate ensures rapid availability of nutrients, particularly ammonium nitrogen; however, it is associated with increased environmental risks. Aerobic composting improves product stability, sanitary safety, and soil fertility, while partially reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to uncontrolled disposal. The roles of labile, humic, and resistant carbon fractions in determining the agronomic properties of biodegradation products are highlighted. The results support the integrated implementation of food waste management strategies to optimize energy recovery, nutrient recycling, and environmental protection.
