English

This review maps how decarbonization drives growing, diversified demand for critical materials, especially in power and transport. It builds a typology of actors and examines intersections between the geopolitics of energy, materials, and water. It stresses integrating environmental sustainability and social considerations for a just transition within planetary boundaries.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Decarbonizing the global energy system is now widely regarded as essential to limiting the rise in global temperatures. This transition is driving a growing and increasingly diversified demand for materials considered “critical” to the energy transition, particularly in the power and transport sectors. Research on the geopolitical transformations resulting from this shift has expanded considerably in recent years. In this context, this article reviews the existing literature by developing a typology of actors and examining the intersections between the geopolitics of energy, materials, and water. It also emphasizes the importance of integrating environmental sustainability and social considerations in order to promote a just energy transition that remains within planetary boundaries.
