English

This paper argues that surging demand for critical minerals for EVs and renewables creates 'sacrifice zones' in the Global South, causing water insecurity and environmental injustice. It contends that technological fixes like direct lithium extraction are insufficient, requiring fundamental political reform.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Globally, this paper highlights the social and environmental externalities of the energy transition, relevant to ISSB/CSRD disclosure on supply chain and social impacts. It underscores the need for transition finance to incorporate justice and water risk, aligning with growing attention to just transition.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The accelerating global demand for critical mineral, essential for electric vehicles, AI technologies, and renewable energy systems, is creating new environmental and social injustices, particularly through severe water insecurity in vulnerable regions of the Global South. While these minerals underpin global energy, digital, and sustainability transitions, their extraction often depletes and contaminates scarce water resources, disrupts livelihoods, and produces profound health disparities. These emerging “sacrifice zones” mirror the exploitative patterns of the fossil fuel era, revealing deep governance failures and widening inequalities that undermine the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Although technological advances such as Direct Lithium Extraction offer partial solutions, the core challenge is political. Without urgent reforms, the global transition risks reproducing the very injustices it seeks to resolve.
