English

This study uses an international input–output framework incorporating a shift to renewable power to assess how BEV diffusion in China affects CO2 emissions and GDP. Under coal-heavy power, BEV penetration raises emissions and GDP in production but lowers both in driving; component-supplying regions in East/Southeast Asia and Europe also see gains. Decarbonizing China's power further cuts emissions and raises domestic GDP while reducing emissions and GDP in fossil-fuel exporters, and falling Chinese fuel demand may cause carbon leakage.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

The paper adds a supply-chain and macro perspective to EV transition debates relevant to Scope 3 accounting and carbon leakage under ISSB/CSRD disclosure. It shows that BEV benefits depend on grid decarbonization and that emissions can shift across borders, informing transition-finance and policy design.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Does the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reduce CO₂ emissions while increasing gross domestic product (GDP)? Past studies emphasized power-sector decarbonization to mitigate https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> CO 2 https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781042018000/e1859d14-8b9c-40db-ac90-652ca1746d16/content/ieq0013.tif "/> associated with BEV adoption in China but did not explore domestic macroeconomic impacts or associated global environmental and economic effects. This chapter examines these factors by incorporating the transition to renewable power generation within an international input–output framework. Three findings emerge. First, under China’s current heavy reliance on coal-fired power, BEV penetration increases CO₂ emissions and GDP during the production stage but reduces both during the driving stage. Second, BEV penetration raises CO₂ emissions and GDP in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe, which supply intermediate components to China. Third, shifting China’s power generation from coal to renewable energy further reduces CO₂ emissions and increases domestic GDP while decreasing https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> CO 2 https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781042018000/e1859d14-8b9c-40db-ac90-652ca1746d16/content/ieq0014.tif "/> emissions and GDP in China’s energy-exporting partners, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Finally, a decline in China’s demand for fossil fuels will lower international prices and increase demand for fossil fuels abroad, potentially resulting in carbon leakage.
