Regenerative agriculture (RA) is promoted for cutting environmental impacts while maintaining productivity, but evidence on yields and GHG emissions is highly variable. Using a stylised UK arable land-use simulation, the authors show that system-level climate outcomes hinge on yield assumptions: yield losses raise land demand and land-use-change emissions that can outweigh field-scale savings, while maintained or higher yields free land for restoration and sequestration. They argue RA's climate impact cannot be inferred from field-scale emissions alone, and policy should explicitly treat productivity, land-use change, and displacement uncertainty.

In the global GX context
As ISSB/CSRD and SBTi FLAG guidance push food and agriculture companies to disclose land-related emissions, this paper warns that field-scale accounting alone can misstate climate benefits. It supports global moves toward system-boundary and land-use-change accounting in corporate climate targets and agricultural transition policy.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Regenerative agriculture (RA) is increasingly promoted as a means of reducing the environmental impacts of food production while maintaining agricultural productivity. However, evidence for its effects on crop yields and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remains highly variable, creating uncertainty about its overall climate benefits. We argue that evaluating RA requires a system-wide perspective that considers productivity, land-use change, and production displacement alongside field-scale emissions. To illustrate this, we developed a stylised land-use simulation representing a UK arable landscape and explored a range of plausible yield and production-emission outcomes reported for RA and its constituent practices. Production shortfalls were met through conventional domestic and international production under alternative intensification and extensification pathways, while yield gains released land for habitat restoration. The analysis shows that system-level climate outcomes are highly sensitive to assumptions about yield response. Yield reductions increased land demand and, where additional production required agricultural expansion, emissions from land-use change frequently outweighed reductions in production emissions. Conversely, maintaining or increasing yields reduced land requirements and created opportunities for habitat restoration and carbon sequestration. Although illustrative rather than predictive, our analysis demonstrates that the climate impact of RA cannot be inferred from field-scale emissions alone. Assessments and policy should explicitly consider uncertainty in productivity, land-use change, and displacement effects when evaluating the climate mitigation potential of regenerative agriculture.
