English

First bibliometric comparison of grassland vs. forest carbon storage research in Sub-Saharan Africa, analyzing 293 open-access articles (2020–2025). Forest research outnumbers grassland 3.6:1 and dominates citations, even when normalized by ecosystem extent and carbon stock. The study calls for stronger grassland carbon measurement and integration into national climate reporting.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

While focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, this study highlights a global blind spot in carbon storage research: grasslands are understudied relative to forests. For ISSB/CSRD reporting, this underscores the need for comprehensive ecosystem accounting and may inform nature-related disclosure frameworks (TNFD) that require balanced treatment of carbon stocks across land types.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Grasslands cover approximately 40% of the Earth’s land surface and store a substantial proportion of global soil organic carbon, yet they remain under-researched compared with forests in the context of climate change mitigation. This study presents a comparative bibliometric analysis of carbon storage research in grasslands versus forests in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where 293 Scopus-indexed, open-access articles published between 2020 and 2025 where examined (64 are grassland focused and 229 are forest focused). The study used Bibliometrix and VOSviewer to compares publication trends and research output, thematic structures and keyword patterns, and geographic distribution and collaboration networks across the two domains. Its contribution lies in being the first side-by-side comparison of the two ecosystems within SSA, and in normalising output against ecosystem extent and estimated carbon stock rather than reporting counts alone. Forest research exceeded grassland research by 3.6:1 and accumulated 2,869 citations (h-index = 27) against 763 (h-index = 15). Normalised against indicative regional estimates, forests attracted roughly seven times more publications per million km 2 and about four times more per petagram of carbon stored. Ethiopia and South Africa dominated forest and grassland research respectively. Forest research centred on above ground biomass, deforestation, and REDD+, while grassland research emphasised soil organic carbon and grazing impacts. The study recommends strengthening grassland carbon measurement, fostering cross-ecosystem collaboration, and integrating grassland carbon into national climate reporting across SSA.
