English

A comparative case study quantifying the carbon footprint and energy consumption of two single-family homes in Presidente Prudente, Brazil. Results show that building material choice and supplier transport distance strongly affect both indicators, reaffirming the need for change in this embodied-carbon-intensive industry.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As global disclosure frameworks (ISSB, CSRD) increasingly require Scope 3 and embodied carbon reporting, this study offers a replicable bottom-up method for quantifying material and transport impacts in residential construction, relevant to construction-sector transition finance and green building standards.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Given the current global context, the effect of climate change on society is notorious and is a clear problem. In this scenario the construction sector has focus points, as it is considered to be one of the activities with the greatest environmental impact on planet Earth, due to the high consumption of natural resources and the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) throughout the building's life cycle. In line with the urgent need for changes in this sector, this work aimed to analyze the environmental impact of using conventional materials in civil construction by analyzing two hypothetical residential projects (case studies), which had two different aspects: their size and location in the urban area, both in the city of Presidente Prudente, Brazil. There was a comparison between the quantification of the carbon footprint and energy consumption of the two homes, which generated a discussion about the impact of conventional construction, based on the relationship between the materials used and their suppliers. The results showed that the choice of building materials and the transportation of suppliers have a major impact on both indicators. They therefore reaffirm the need for change in this industry embodied carbon generator.
