English

A review synthesizing the state of the art on soil nature-based solutions (NbS) across environmental, social and economic dimensions. Agroforestry, reforestation, biochar and bioremediation support carbon sequestration, biodiversity and water regulation, yet adoption is constrained by funding limits, policy misalignment and thin long-term evidence. Poor reporting of soil types and application sectors hampers replicability, so the authors call for interdisciplinary collaboration, public-private funding and policy integration.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Aligns with the global shift toward nature-related disclosure under TNFD and ISSB's biodiversity work, and with CSRD's soil and ecosystem requirements. Its emphasis on funding schemes and policy alignment speaks to transition-finance debates on how to bank nature-based projects with measurable outcomes.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Soil degradation presents significant global challenges, threatening food security, biodiversity and ecosystem services, while intensifying the impacts of climate change. Soil NbS offer viable alternatives to conventional engineered solutions by integrating biodiversity conservation with sustainable land management practices such as agroforestry, reforestation, biochar application and bioremediation. Technically, soil NbS contribute to erosion control, soil restoration, and pollutant remediation; environmentally, they support carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and ecosystem resilience; socially, they promote stakeholder engagement and sustainable land management; and economically, they can reduce dependence on conventional engineered solutions while creating new financing opportunities. This review analysed the current state of the art on soil NbS, highlighting these multidimensional benefits and identifying challenges and opportunities, such as funding schemes, interdisciplinary collaboration, policy alignment, long-term evidence and research gaps. From a technical perspective, the study highlighted that soil NbS were mainly applied for soil protection, with emphasis on addressing land degradation across global and regional contexts. However, inadequate reporting of soil types and application sectors may limit replicability and scalability, highlighting the need for context-specific documentation. Moreover, the findings reinforced that soil NbS success depends not only on technical performance but also on institutional support, inclusive governance, and integrated planning. Despite their benefits, soil NbS adoption is constrained by funding limitations, policy misalignment, lack of long-term evidence and stakeholder engagement. To overcome these barriers, the review emphasises interdisciplinary collaboration, sustainable funding (e.g., public-private partnerships) and integration into policy frameworks. Public awareness campaigns and training programs are essential for increasing stakeholder acceptance.
