Abstract The global fight against climate change depends on CCUS technology which serves as a vital collection of environmental solutions for greenhouse gas emission reduction. The world has established a goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 which makes CCUS technologies essential for all sectors that include energy and industrial and chemical operations. The technical review provides an extensive assessment of CCUS technology development and market trends and deployment challenges and projected advancement routes which show the industry continues to evolve. The present-day CCUS operations across the world process 145 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 every year through 25 operational facilities while 130 additional projects are under development and planning. The current deployment rate shows a four times growth from 2015 but it does not meet the necessary pace to reach Paris Agreement climate targets. The assessment in this review evaluates technology readiness levels together with economic viability assessments and market force analysis and regulatory framework evaluations to determine the potential for widespread CCUS system deployment.
