English

A pilot, human-annotated dataset of rhetorical features in ESG reports, coded via an Aristotelian ethos/pathos/logos scheme. It serves as reference data to develop and calibrate LLM prompts for scalable rhetorical analysis across 100 ESG reports. The project examines whether corporate ESG disclosure is persuasive rather than purely informational.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As CSRD, ISSB and SEC climate rules push disclosure volume up, distinguishing persuasive rhetoric from substantive information becomes central to greenwashing scrutiny. This human-coded reference set for LLM-based rhetorical analysis offers a methodological template for disclosure-quality research.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This dataset contains manually annotated data derived from ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) reports and was created as part of an interdisciplinary research project investigating rhetorical strategies in ESG reporting https://projekty.ncn.gov.pl/index.php?projekt_id=649007. The project combines perspectives from management studies, corporate communication, philosophy, and computational text analysis. The purpose of the dataset is to provide a human-coded reference dataset for the identification and analysis of rhetorical features in ESG reports. The annotation framework is based on a systematic coding scheme designed to capture rhetorical appeals in ESG communication. The research framework draws on the Aristotelian distinction between ethos, pathos, and logos. The dataset constitutes a methodological foundation for the subsequent large-scale analysis. The manually coded data will be used to develop, calibrate, and evaluate prompts and procedures for Large Language Models (LLMs), which will subsequently be applied to a corpus of 100 ESG reports. Human annotations will therefore serve as reference data for assessing the ability of LLMs to reproduce the coding scheme consistently and to support scalable rhetorical analysis. The objective of the project is to identify patterns and differences in rhetorical strategies used in ESG reporting, compare rhetorical profiles across reports and industries, and investigate the extent to which corporate ESG disclosures rely on persuasive rather than purely informational communication.
