English

This study integrates the CLEARS residential technology diffusion model with a new agent-based model of energy community (EC) formation, applied to Austria through 2040 under four scenarios. Rooftop PV adoption is the key enabler of EC diffusion, raising household membership from 18% to 23% in rural and 22% to 30% in urban areas. Consumer households save €120–195 annually, and ECs more than double local solar utilisation versus individual self-consumption.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Energy communities (ECs) are increasingly recognised as an important mechanism for accelerating the energy transition by enabling the collective production, storage, and sharing of renewable energy. However, their diffusion depends not only on technical and economic performance but also on household participation decisions and social dynamics. This study develops an integrated modelling framework that combines the CLean Energy Adoption in the Residential Sector (CLEARS) technology diffusion model with a newly developed agent-based model of EC formation and participation. The framework captures interactions between rooftop PV adoption, residential battery diffusion, social influence, economic incentives, and local electricity sharing. The model is applied to Austria and simulates the evolution of ECs and distributed energy technologies under four scenarios until 2040. The results indicate that rooftop PV adoption is a key enabler of EC diffusion, as prosumers not only provide the surplus electricity required for community energy sharing but also increase awareness and acceptance through social learning processes. Compared to the Reference scenario, accelerated technology diffusion increases EC membership from 18% to 23% of households in rural areas and from 22% to 30% in urban areas by 2040. EC participation generates substantial economic benefits, particularly for consumer households, whose annual savings reach €120–195. Furthermore, ECs more than double the local utilisation of solar electricity relative to individual self-consumption, while residential batteries further enhance local renewable energy use. The findings demonstrate the strong dependence of social innovation on technological diffusion and highlight the importance of integrating behavioural processes into techno-economic assessments of energy communities.
