English
This paper analyzes the Habshan-5 CO2 Recovery and Injection (CRI) project as an execution-stage case of integrated carbon capture, conditioning and utilization within a gas-processing facility. It examines brownfield integration, reuse of existing low-pressure steam for solvent regeneration, and a three-case (BAU, CCUS, integrated CCUC) framework distinguishing gross recovery from net GHG abatement. The work offers a transferable framework for embedding full carbon-management chains into hard-to-abate industrial sites.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
As global disclosure regimes (ISSB, CSRD) tighten scrutiny of net-versus-gross abatement claims, this case illustrates how CCUS projects can document lifecycle GHG performance and boundary-consistent accounting—useful for transition-finance and industrial decarbonization benchmarking.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Industrial decarbonization increasingly depends on integrating large-scale carbon-management infrastructure into existing assets rather than relying exclusively on greenfield developments. This paper presents the Habshan-5 CO2 Recovery and Injection (CRI) Project as an execution-stage case study of an integrated carbon capture, conditioning and utilization development within a major gas-processing facility. Habshan-5 CRI is designed to recover carbon dioxide from gas-processing-related streams, condition the recovered CO₂ through compression and dehydration, and deliver it for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). The project integrates these stages into a single, connected carbon-management value chain linked with the existing gas-processing ecosystem, and supports ADNOC Gas's stated objective of reducing operational (Scope 1 and Scope 2) greenhouse gas emissions intensity by up to 25% by 2030 against a Business-as-Usual baseline, as well as, to ADNOC's stated ambition to develop 10 million tonnes per annum of carbon-capture capacity by 2030. The study examines the project's strategic alignment, process architecture, brownfield integration, solvent-management provisions, thermal reclaiming, energy integration and environmental-assessment methodology. A central feature is the utilization of available low-pressure steam from the existing gas-processing complex for solvent regeneration, reducing reliance on wholly incremental thermal-energy generation and strengthening integration between the carbon-recovery facilities and the wider site-energy system. Environmental performance is evaluated using a design-stage assessment framework that compares a Reference or BAU Case, a CCUS Case and an Integrated CCUC Case. The methodology distinguishes gross CO₂ recovery from net greenhouse gas abatement by accounting for residual direct emissions and energy-related indirect emissions within the defined project boundary. Assessment results are reported using normalized indicators that enable evaluation without disclosure of confidential utility balances or project GHG inventories. The study also introduces complementary benchmarking frameworks covering net-abatement assessment practices and global industrial CCUS deployment experience, positioning Habshan-5 CRI within the broader carbon-management landscape. The findings demonstrate that the project's significance extends beyond capture technology. Its wider contribution lies in integrating a complete carbon-management chain into an existing gas-processing ecosystem through resource integration, lifecycle GHG assessment, operational flexibility and alignment with national and corporate decarbonization pathways. The resulting insights provide a transferable framework for future CCUS developments in gas processing and other hard-to-abate industrial sectors.
