English

This paper addresses the paradox that AI systems providing ecosystem services also consume water through their infrastructure. It proposes the AI–Nature Reciprocity Gate, a local, seasonal, full-scope standard to verify whether nature-based benefits repay the ecological water burden of AI systems. Using data-centre water replenishment as a case, it offers a framework for mutual benefit between AI and nature.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Globally, this standard addresses the growing scrutiny of data-centre water use under frameworks like CSRD and TNFD. It provides a rigorous method to certify nature-based solutions, aligning with global biodiversity and climate adaptation goals. It offers a transferable model for assessing AI's ecological footprint beyond carbon.

A novel framework linking AI's water footprint to nature-based solutions, opening avenues for empirical validation and refinement.

Data-centre operators and sustainability teams can use this standard to certify water replenishment and enhance ESG reporting.

Regulators can consider this standard for water-related disclosure requirements and incentives for nature-based solutions.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used for biodiversity monitoring, ecosystem restoration, climate adap-tation, and water management, yet the infrastructure producing those services consumes water directly, in-directly through electricity, and upstream through hardware. This paper develops the AI–Nature ReciprocityGate, a local, seasonal, full-scope standard for determining whether verified nature-based benefits repay theecological water burden of the AI system producing them.
