Case study of the Bouri Gas Utilization Project offshore Libya, integrating solid-bed dehydration with hollow-fibre polymeric membrane acid gas removal to treat high-CO2 natural gas. The design cuts routine flaring, meets fuel-gas specs, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% versus historical flaring levels.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Objectives / Scope The Bouri Gas Utilization Project in Libya was developed to design, construct, and commission advanced gas processing facilities for treating natural gas streams with high CO2 content. The primary objective was to enable production of high-quality fuel gas, eliminate routine flaring, improve hydrocarbon recovery, and support upstream decarbonization in alignment with global energy transitio n and sustainability goals. Methods, Procedures, Process The integrated process design comprised two main treatment stages. Initially, CO2-rich natural gas was dehydrated using a Solid Bed Dehydration system configured with two parallel beds to ensure continuous operation and efficient water removal. The system was designed to achieve a treated gas water content of less than 4.5 lbs/mmscf, ensuring downstream equipment protection and pipeline transport reliability. Subsequently, a controlled slipstream of dehydrated gas was routed to an Acid Gas Removal Package, where CO2 concentration was reduced to below 10 vol%. This was achieved using a proprietary hollow-fibre polymeric membrane technology, selected for its high separation efficiency under demanding operating conditions and ability to consistently meet fuel gas specifications. The overall system integration was optimized using prior engineering studies, simulations, and lessons learned from comparable applications to ensure operational robustness and flexibility. Results, Observations, Conclusions The implemented solution enabled reliable production of specification-compliant fuel gas while significantly reducing flaring dependency. The integrated dehydration and acid gas removal systems improved operational efficiency, enhanced equipment protection, and ensured long-term production stability. The project is expected to deliver up to a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to historical flaring levels at the Bouri facility under MOG operations, contributing meaningfully to environmental performance improvement and decarbonization objectives. Novel / Additive Information This project demonstrates the successful integration of Solid Bed Dehydration and advanced membrane based acid gas removal technologies in a high CO2 offshore gas field environment. The application of a proprietary hollow-fibre polymeric membrane technology in combination with a dual bed dehydration system provides a resilient and flexible gas treatment solution capable of handling variable feed compositions while maintaining strict product specifications. The Bouri Gas Utilization Project highlights how advanced gas processing integration can convert previously flared gas into v aluable energy, delivering both operational and environmental benefits. It serves as a benchmark for sustainable gas utilization strategies and supports broader upstream decarbonization initiatives within the oil and gas industry.
