ABSTRACT Cocoa production in Ghana, a key global producer, is increasingly threatened by climate change and Land Use/Land Cover Changes, endangering the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. While climate change and land use/land cover changes have often been examined in isolation, research on their combined effects is rare. This study investigates long-term climate trends and land use/land cover dynamics in the Atwima Mponua District, Ghana, and examines their combined (i.e., co-occurring influences or interacting pressures) effects on cocoa production. A mixed-methods approach integrates quantitative climate and land use data with qualitative insights to assess yield implications. The study draws on multiple data sources, including household surveys with 200 farmers, semi-structured interviews, and climate records from 1980 to 2020, analyzed using Mann-Kendall trend tests. Land use and land cover changes were assessed using satellite imagery classified with random forests. Results indicate a significant rise in temperature and erratic rainfall patterns, which together explain 31.3% of the variability in annual cocoa production. Closed forest cover declined by 42 percentage points over four decades, mainly between 2010 and 2020, driven by deforestation, population growth, and unsustainable farming practices. Farmers reported declining soil fertility, increased pest and disease outbreaks, and rising production costs as perceived effects of climate and land use/land cover changes. Integrated interventions, including sustainable land management, climate-smart agriculture, and agroforestry, are crucial in enhancing smallholder farmers’ resilience. These findings contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on hunger, climate action, and land conservation.
