English

A structured review assessing natural (geologic) hydrogen's role in Canada's net-zero transition across geology, techno-economics, environment, and policy. Canada shows favorable geology (Canadian Shield, Cordillera, Western Sedimentary and Williston Basins), but commercial viability hinges on confirmed accumulations, flow rates, purity, depth, and infrastructure proximity. Screening suggests ~USD 2.10/kg delivered cost, with flow rate, purity, depth, and transport as dominant drivers. Provincial policy remains uneven, so deployment depends on clearer regulation.

In the global GX context

Natural hydrogen sits at the frontier of global hydrogen strategy, relevant to ISSB/transition-finance debates on credible low-carbon pathways. Canada's province-level regulatory fragmentation offers a case study for how policy readiness shapes emerging energy sources.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Natural hydrogen, or geologic hydrogen, is increasingly being considered a potential low-carbon energy source for Canada’s net-zero transition. This review evaluates the extent to which natural hydrogen can contribute to Canada’s low-carbon energy transition by examining its geological prospectivity, techno-economic viability, environmental considerations, and policy readiness. This review is based on a structured literature review of peer-reviewed journal articles and government and industry reports, supported by a techno-economic screening of production, purification, and transportation costs using CAPEX, OPEX, and LCOH as primary indicators. The results show that Canada has favourable geological conditions for natural hydrogen generation and accumulation, particularly within the Canadian Shield, Cordillera, Western Sedimentary Basin, and Williston Basin. However, commercial viability remains uncertain, hinging on confirmed subsurface accumulations, sufficient flow rates, high wellhead purity, appropriate well depth, and proximity to infrastructure and end-use markets. Preliminary screening suggested a delivered hydrogen cost of approximately USD 2.10/kg, with sensitivity analysis identifying well flow rate, purity, depth, and transportation needs as dominant cost drivers. Although natural hydrogen presents lower emissions than conventional hydrogen, issues such as leakage, groundwater disturbance, land use, and monitoring requirements must be addressed in future studies. Policy frameworks remain uneven across provinces, indicating that the role of natural hydrogen in Canada's low-carbon energy transition will depend not only on geological prospectivity but also on commercial viability and clearer regulatory guidance.
