English
This study models California's deep decarbonization of the power grid and light-duty EV fleet using a stochastic grid optimization that incorporates lifecycle emissions and the Social Cost of Carbon ($51–340/tCO2, $190 as basis). Nuclear-inclusive scenarios cut CO2 substantially and reduce the need for stationary storage; excluding nuclear raises power resource requirements. Combined grid-plus-vehicle lifecycle CO2 falls ~85% by 2050, with EV manufacturing the dominant residual source.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Carbon emissions from the electrical energy and transportation sectors are two of the largest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing these emissions will be key to mitigating the worst impacts of global climate change. This study models the economic and lifecycle carbon impacts of transitioning California toward a deeply decarbonized electric power grid and light-duty electric vehicle fleet. A stochastic grid optimization model incorporating wind, solar, nuclear and grid scale battery expansion and the use of vehicle-to-grid technologies and coordinated charging strategies is expanded to include lifecycle carbon emissions and the economic impact of these emissions using Social Cost of Carbon (SCC). Grid configurations are evaluated using values ranging from $51 to $340 per metric ton of CO 2 , with 190/tCO 2 used as the basis for carbon inclusive economic optimization. Results show that decarbonization is economically competitive when evaluated with modern SCC estimates considered. Within the bounds of the model results show that a nuclear-inclusive optimization results in substantially reduced CO 2 emissions as compared to scenarios where the growth of nuclear energy is not included, excluding nuclear energy also results in significant increases in the need for stationary power resources. Despite reducing combined grid and light-duty vehicle lifecycle CO 2 emissions approximately 85% by 2050, significant lifecycle emissions remain, with the manufacture of electric vehicles being the primary source of these emissions. These results demonstrate the importance of evaluating electricity generation, storage and vehicle fleet electrification with lifecycle emissions as an integrated system to assess decarbonization pathways.
