English

A novel hierarchical nano-acrylic copolymer was synthesized via seeded semi-batch emulsion polymerization, using tert-butyl amine (TBA) neutralization to suppress epoxide ring-opening while installing dense tertiary amine CO2 capture sites. The TBA-functionalized latex achieved 49.2% CO2 removal at 30°C versus 0-3% for the ammonium analogue, with bicarbonate formation confirmed by low-temperature TGA. The work offers a low-energy solid adsorbent platform for ambient CO2 capture and indoor air quality management.

In the global GX context

Globally, solid amine adsorbents for ambient/DAC CO2 capture are central to net-zero pathways and increasingly linked to carbon removal markets and corporate net-zero claims. This paper adds a low-energy polymer chemistry route relevant to CCUS innovation, though it remains at lab-scale material characterization with limited direct disclosure or policy implication.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract

The increasing concentration of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere, as a result of human activities such as the combustion of fossil fuels, requires novel approaches for carbon capture, utilization, and storage. Liquid amine scrubbing is the state-of-the-art technology for CO₂ capture; however, its large-scale industrialization is impeded by an immense energy demand for regeneration and accelerated equipment corrosion. These limitations hinder the potential of post-combustion amine-based scrubbing for decentralized direct air capture and indoor air quality applications. Herein is proposed a sustainable and efficient solid-state adsorbent for ambient CO₂ capture based on a novel polymeric composite synthesized by controlled seeded semi-batch emulsion polymerization of styrene, butyl acrylate, acrylic acid (AA), and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The incorporation of tertiary-butyl amine (TBA) instead of the ubiquitous ammonium hydroxide during neutralization was found to suppress undesired epoxide ring-opening side reactions, while introducing high concentration of functional tertiary amine sites for CO₂ capture. The polymer composite microstructure and physicochemical properties were elucidated in detail using a combination of dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) phase imaging, and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC). It was found that the incorporation of TBA into the latex polymer matrix results in increased ionic crosslinking sites, leading to a higher glass transition temperature (Tg = 146 °C) and an overall more amorphous and dispersed composite structure. Remarkably, while the ammonium functionalized latex composite showed almost no CO₂ capture ability (0-3%), the TBA sample demonstrated a tremendously high performance with 49.2% CO₂ removal at 30 °C. Moreover, low-temperature TGA confirmed the occurrence of chemical absorption of CO₂ through the formation of the bicarbonate complex. Overall, the work demonstrates the underlying mechanisms of polymer composite formation and CO₂ capture abilities of a novel smart anti-carbonation latex composite material based on the modification of the latex matrix with tertiary amines for the first time and provides a platform for future development of sustainable air quality management technologies.
