English

This review synthesizes how biochar (BC) from waste biomass pyrolysis can advance carbon neutrality in conservation agro-ecosystems via two pathways: aboveground growth improvement and belowground carbon-pool enhancement. BC improves soil aeration and methane oxidation, boosts photosynthesis and plant biomass, but its endogenous contaminants and long-term persistence raise chronic ecological concerns. Standardized, locally tailored BC production and application remain key hurdles.

In the global GX context

Biochar-based soil carbon sequestration connects to emerging carbon-removal accounting and Scope 3 land-sector discussions under ISSB/CSRD, though this review stays at the technical/ecological level rather than disclosure practice. It offers a synthesis useful for framing removals in agricultural transition pathways.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Introduction Pyrolysis of waste biomass to generate biochar (BC) is an important technology for recycling and reusing biomass carbon, which promotes carbon neutrality. BC mechanisms toward ‘Carbon Neutrality' in conservation agro-ecosystems (CAESs) remain incompletely synthesized. BC application can promote soil aeration rates, thereby enhancing the biological oxidation of methane (CH 4 ). BC promotes photosynthesis, plant biomass, and health, providing ecological and financial benefits. Methods A review search methodology was adopted to comprehensively screen and synthesize the most relevant literature on the application of BC to promote carbon neutrality in CAESs. Results This review explores BC's potential benefits to achieve carbon neutrality in Conservation Agro-Ecosystems through two major pathways: (a) overground growth improvement and (b) underground-level carbon-pool enhancement. Nevertheless, BC's endogenous contaminants and long-term persistence suggest it could pose chronic ecological and environmental problems. This work provides an initial assessment of the function and mechanism of BC in facilitating carbon neutrality in CAESs. Furthermore, because BC has positive effects on plant development and soil improvement, it is recommended to develop BC-based sustainable soils. To date, significant hurdles remain in producing environmentally friendly BC, selecting the optimal type and amount of BC to apply, and applying it in accordance with local soil characteristics. Future studies should examine the processes by which BC promotes soil carbon sequestration and its long-term environmental impacts. Conclusion The extensive synthesis of standardized biochar should be broadened to guarantee the efficient integration of waste biomass and the sustainable production of biochar. A prerequisite for the smart implementation of BC is to ensure its durable application for carbon neutrality.
