English

This paper reports the academic component of the EU LIFE Skills4DHC project, which builds training schemes to close skills gaps along the district heating and cooling value chain. It maps existing educational offers and designs a flexible framework of modules and courses at Master's, PhD and postgraduate levels. Italian pilot results show that combining lectures, practical exercises and interdisciplinary collaboration works well, while heterogeneous participant backgrounds require adaptive training structures.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The deployment and decarbonisation of District Heating and Cooling (DHC) systems are widely recognised as key drivers of the European energy transition. Beyond technological innovation, regulatory frameworks and financial support, this transition requires a skilled workforce and updated educational pathways, particularly within higher education systems. In this context, the EU LIFE project Skills4DHC aims to strengthen competences along the DHC value chain through the development of innovative training schemes. This paper focuses on the academic component of the project, presenting the design of academic training schemes and the first results from their pilot implementation. The paper outlines the methodological approach adopted for the development of academic training schemes, based on the identification of skills gaps and the mapping of existing educational offers. Building on this analysis, a structured and flexible framework has been defined, including modules and full courses at different educational levels (Master’s, PhD, and postgraduate). The framework integrates thematic areas, learning objectives, and practice-oriented teaching approaches, supporting the integration of DHC topics into university curricula. The paper then presents the first pilot implementations, focusing on the Italian case. Results highlight the effectiveness of combining theoretical lectures, practical exercises, and interdisciplinary collaboration, while also revealing key challenges, such as heterogeneous participant backgrounds and the need for adaptive training structures. Overall, the results demonstrate the relevance of structured academic programmes and pilot-based validation in supporting capacity building for the decarbonisation of DHC systems, contributing to the alignment of higher education with emerging sector needs.
