English

This paper critically examines the environmental and socio-economic impacts of green hydrogen development in South Africa, identifying challenges and opportunities. As Africa's largest GHG emitter, South Africa can use green hydrogen to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like transport and agriculture. Key challenges include achieving competitive production costs, addressing renewable intermittency, freshwater scarcity, and establishing robust regulatory frameworks.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This paper offers a valuable Global South perspective on green hydrogen development, highlighting challenges such as water scarcity and regulatory gaps that are often overlooked in developed-country discussions. It contributes to the global discourse on just energy transitions and the conditions for hydrogen economies in emerging markets.

👥 読者別の含意

🔬研究者:Provides a comprehensive overview of green hydrogen challenges in an African context, useful for comparative studies on hydrogen economies in resource-rich developing countries.

🏛政策担当者:Offers insights for designing regulatory frameworks and addressing socio-economic and environmental trade-offs in hydrogen strategy.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This paper critically examines the environmental and socio-economic impacts of green hydrogen (GH 2 ) development in South Africa, investigating the challenges and opportunities for its successful implementation. Guided by the discourses on developments within South Africa's GH 2 economy, the study employs a rapid appraisal of existing literature to derive insights from both scholarly and non-scholarly sources, as well as case studies centered on key themes. As Africa's largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG), primarily due to its reliance on fossil fuels, South Africa's GH 2 economy has the potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as transport and agriculture. To realize this potential, the country must achieve competitive GH 2 production costs while addressing challenges such as renewable energy intermittency, energy security, and freshwater shortages. Furthermore, establishing comprehensive regulatory frameworks is crucial for promoting economic growth, generating employment opportunities, and ensuring environmental sustainability within the GH 2 economy. The paper also emphasizes the need for further research into freshwater availability, social inclusion strategies for electrolysis, and the development of inclusive policies nationwide.
