English

This paper proposes a simplified methodology to estimate minimized land impact for renewable self-sufficiency in small energy systems, using Fuerteventura, Spain as a case study for 2030 and 2040 decarbonization targets. The energy mix combines solar and wind with battery and hydrogen storage in three stages. Results show land demand ranges from 12.3 km² (all solar, high self-consumption) to 81.7 km² (all onshore wind). Findings indicate that small systems can achieve decarbonization targets with balanced renewable mixes and optimized storage, minimizing land impact.

In the global GX context

Globally, many small energy systems (islands, remote communities) aim for renewable self-sufficiency. This paper provides a simple, replicable methodology to assess land use and storage needs, which can inform energy planning and policy in diverse contexts. The staged storage approach (battery and hydrogen) offers a practical framework for balancing land impact and reliability.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This study evaluates how to minimize land use and achieve renewable energy self-sufficiency in small systems, using Fuerteventura, Spain, as a case study. The analysis focuses on the island’s 2030 and 2040 decarbonization targets. The energy mix relies on solar and wind resources, prioritizing self-consumption, with storage using batteries and hydrogen. A conservative approach to full electrification is applied, considering three storage stages: the first 20% of renewable generation operates without significant storage, the next 60% is supported by one day of battery storage, and the final 20% relies on hydrogen storage covering 14 days of consumption. Geographic analysis of existing installations estimates land requirements. Results indicate land demand ranges from 12.3 km2 in fully photovoltaic scenarios with high self-consumption to 81.7 km2 in fully onshore wind scenarios. Findings highlight that, with simple methodologies, small systems can check decarbonization targets, with balanced renewable mixes and optimized storage, minimizing land impact.
