This study develops a hybrid framework coupling smart-meter-calibrated EnergyPlus models with localized cradle-to-site embodied energy estimation for Ethiopian urban housing across temperate and semi-arid zones. Lifetime energy baselines reach 21,741.7–24,660.7 MJ/m², with operational energy dominating at 68.4–72.2%. It reveals a 'climatic thermal compromise' in standardized mass housing, projecting a 31% cooling surge in semi-arid lowlands versus 6% in temperate highlands, and shows integrated mitigation can cut lifetime energy by 28.4–29.0%, supporting climatically differentiated MEPS.

In the global GX context

While the study is Ethiopia-specific, its call for climatically differentiated Minimum Energy Performance Standards and its integrated operational-plus-embodied accounting resonate with global building decarbonization policy (EU EPBD, building codes) and the growing emphasis on whole-life carbon in disclosure frameworks.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The built environment of sub-Saharan Africa faces a critical deficit in lifecycle energy benchmarks, compounded by rapidly escalating residential demand driven by urbanization and climatic stress. Existing energy analysis practice seldom integrates operational and embodied energy accounting across climatically divergent contexts, limiting the evidence base for differentiated building performance policy. This study develops and validates a hybrid framework that couples smart-meter-calibrated EnergyPlus operational models with localized cradle-to-site embodied energy estimation for Ethiopia’s urban housing, developed across the temperate and the semi-arid climate zones. The results reveal lifetime energy baselines of 21741.7-24660.7 MJ/m², while operational energy dominates at 68.4–72.2%. The study uncovers a critical ‘climatic thermal compromise’ in standardized mass housing designs. Adama’s 20% fan penetration signals a high-risk transition to active cooling, with validated projections showing a 31% latent cooling surge in semi-arid lowlands versus only 6% in temperate highlands. Furthermore, standardized semi-prefabricated construction yields an identical embodied energy of 6865.4 MJ/m², though 3.63% is offsetable through strategic material substitution. Crucially, integrated scenarios prove that mitigation achieves consistent savings across both evaluated climatic contexts, achieving robust lifetime savings of 28.4–29.0%. By demonstrating that targeted technological displacement decouples energy demand from climatic variability, this study advocates for climatically differentiated Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) to pre-empt grid stress from escalating cooling demand while advancing lifecycle sustainability.
