English

This study examines how 50 mm polypropylene fibers affect concrete's CO2 sequestration via accelerated carbonation testing. Specimens with 0.3% and 1.3% fiber fractions showed higher weight gains (1.86%, 2.25%) than controls (1.75%), indicating enhanced CO2 diffusion, while intermediate dosages (0.64%, 1.0%) slightly reduced carbon retention. The results reveal a non-linear relationship between fiber volume fraction and carbon uptake, suggesting optimized fiber dosages can improve both mechanical performance and CO2 capture in construction materials.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Tackling climate change and cutting greenhouse gas emissions compel the modern construction industry to develop more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions. In this context, carbonation — a natural process in which concrete captures and stores carbon dioxide (CO2) within its structure throughout its service life — presents a significant potential for carbon sequestration strategies. This study investigates the impact of 50 mm long polymeric (polypropylene) fibers on the carbon sequestration capacity of con crete thro ugh accelerated carbonation testing. Within the scope of the research, concrete specimens containing polypropylene fibers at various volumetric fractions (0.3%, 0.64%, 1.0%, and 1.3%) were produced alongside fiber - free control specimens. The weight changes of the specimens before and after the carbonation process were precisely measured to quantitatively determine the amounts of trapped CO2. Experimental results demonstrated that fiber addition and dosage variations directly influence the carbon capture performance of concrete, creating distinct differences in weight gain. Concrete groups containing 0.3% and 1.3% polymeric fib ers exhibited hig her average weight increases (1.86% and 2.25%, respectively) compared to the control specimens (1.75%). This indicates that specific fiber networks optimize micro - cracks and the pore structure within the concrete, thereby accelerating CO2 diffusion and enhancing carbon sequestration capacity. Conversely, a slight decrease in carbon retention (1.69% and 1.68%) wa s observed at intermediate dosages such as 0.64% and 1.0%, pointing to a non - linear relationship between fiber volume fraction and carbon absorption. In conclusion, the use of 50 mm long polymeric fibers at optimized dosages not only improves mechanical performance but also enhances CO2 capture potential, offering a sustainable alternative for the construction sector to reduce the negative impacts of climate change.
