Presents an integrated simulator reformulating surface facility models in pressure-enthalpy (P-H) variables to robustly handle narrow-boiling fluids like CO2-rich mixtures. Demonstrated on a realistic CCUS case coupling CO2 source, pipelines, injection wells, and a discretized reservoir. P-H formulation improves nonlinear convergence and enables physically consistent energy conservation over prior isothermal assumptions.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Integrated simulation of multi-reservoir production systems with surface facilities is frequently required in cases involving narrow-boiling fluids – fluids with a narrow phase envelope such as CO2 rich mixtures – for which conventional pressure-temperature (P-T) formulations are inadequate. We present a fully integrated simulator in which model equations for surface facility equipment are reformulated in terms of pressure and enthalpy (P-H) as primary variables, enabling robust handling of such fluids across the complete system. The simulator is demonstrated on a realistic CCUS case comprising a CO2 source, surface and subsea pipelines, and a distribution network connected to injection wells coupled to a compositional discretized reservoir model. The P-H reformulation is applied to an existing Integrated Production System Model (IPSM) simulator, whose Models-Equations-Variables (MEV) architecture (Hiebert et al., 2011) enables plug-and-play substitution of formulations across the system. A novel algorithm introduces temperature constraint equations expressed in P-H variables at all network connecting nodes, preserving temperature tracking for constraint specification and reporting without requiring any change in user input. The simulator supports flexible system configuration: reservoirs may be represented as full discretized models or decline curve proxies; wells as simple source/sink terms or multi-segment tubing models with multiphase flow and heat transfer; and wells and reservoirs are coupled via Inflow Performance Relationship (IPR) tables. Each subsystem may be run independently or fully coupled. We find that enthalpy as a primary variable yields a more natural expression of energy balance equations in equipment models, with improved nonlinear convergence that more than compensates for the additional cost of P-H flash calculations. Furthermore, equipment models that previously required isothermal mixing assumptions under P-T formulation can instead employ physically consistent energy conservation under P-H.
