Using the APSIM-OilPalm model, this study simulated productivity and carbon balance across 25 industrial oil palm sites on mineral soils in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Carbon sinks were low-variability and driven mainly by biomass accumulation, with soil and management showing limited influence; high mitigation-adaptation performance linked to higher plant density and nitrogen fertilisation. Over half the sites still face yield and SOC adaptation challenges, and the work offers a framework for verifying climate-friendly sites.

📄 Abstract(原文)
CONTEXTDespite growing demand for “climate-friendly” palm oil, little is known about how existing soil and management conditions align with climate mitigation and adaptation goals.OBJECTIVEThis study characterised the climate mitigation and adaptation performance of oil palm (OP) production across different soil and management conditions using a robust spatiotemporal estimate of productivity and carbon balance.METHODSThe Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM)-OilPalm model was used to simulate productivity and carbon balance in 25 industrial OP sites on mineral soils in North Sumatra, Indonesia. K-means clustering identified groupings based on simulated productivity and carbon balance with observed soil and management characteristics.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSSimulated OP productivity exhibited moderate variability, indicating good agreement with observed data in ideal conditions (MAE 2.37–5.30 tFFB ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). Spatiotemporal OP carbon balance showed low-variability carbon sinks (−2.09 to −3.86 tCeq ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹), primarily driven by biomass accumulation, while variations in soil and management had minimal influence. These findings underscore the potential of OP on mineral soils to act as carbon sinks while highlighting significant temporal contributions from CO₂ emissions and SOC changes. Clustering revealed that high-performing climate mitigation and adaptation sites were linked to higher plant density and nitrogen fertilisation, with moderate sand content and Ganoderma boninense infection. However, challenges remain, particularly in adaptation for yield and SOC increments, affecting over half of the sites.SIGNIFICANCEBy characterising climate mitigation and adaptation performance, this research identifies key soil and management factors, improvement opportunities, and a framework for verifying climate-friendly sites to support a more resilient global supply of vegetable oil.
