This study quantifies life-cycle carbon footprints of eight representative telecommunication-related services in China, analyzing provincial spatial heterogeneity. Per-transaction footprints range from 238 to 399 g CO2-eq, with transportation dominating most services. Total 2023 emissions reach 50.69 kt CO2-eq; combining digital substitution with improved service accessibility yields the strongest mitigation, up to 73.21% by 2060.

In the global GX context
This paper extends carbon accounting beyond infrastructure to service-level footprints, offering a methodology that could inform Scope 3 Category 11 assessments for telecom and service sectors globally. The scenario analysis on digital substitution aligns with global efforts to quantify avoided emissions from digitalization, relevant to ISSB and CSRD reporting.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Since the Third Industrial Revolution, the telecommunication industry has developed rapidly, greatly facilitating modern life while also contributing considerable carbon emissions. Existing studies have mainly focused on emissions from telecommunication infrastructure, such as data centers, whereas far less attention has been paid to the carbon emissions associated with telecommunication-related services. Here, we quantify the life-cycle carbon footprints of eight representative telecommunication-related services in China, characterize their provincial spatial heterogeneity, and further evaluate future mitigation potential under different population, digital-substitution, and service-accessibility scenarios. The per-transaction carbon footprint ranges from 238.22 (offline inquiry & processing) to 399.18 g CO 2 -eq (offline loan). Transportation is the dominant source of emissions in most services, while paper use contributes more strongly to documentation-intensive services. Total carbon emissions from the eight selected services reach 50.69 kt CO 2 -eq in 2023, with high-emission provinces mainly concentrated in the eastern coastal and southern regions, accounting for 40.13% of the total emissions. The scenario analysis shows that neither online substitution nor improved service accessibility alone can fully offset population-driven emission growth, whereas their combination consistently delivers the strongest mitigation effect. Under the most favorable combined pathway, the mitigation potential reaches 73.21% by 2060, with a maximum reduction of 77.82% under SSP1. These findings provide support for prioritizing digital substitution and improving service accessibility in the low-carbon transition of the telecommunication sector.
