Abstract Clean Giant is about how China, through a range of government and market measures since the turn of the 21st century, fundamentally changed its energy system and large parts of its industrial base, and in turn seized greater shares of fast-growing and -evolving global supply chains—for electric vehicles and batteries; minerals and metals; as well as solar, wind, and nuclear power. The energy needs behind China’s growing wealth and global prominence since the late 1970s have also generated a range of problems. This is also a book about power, industrial policy, and how to foment large-scale change, as well as about how to stimulate new industries and how to transform old ones. No country is more relevant to efforts to transition the world’s fossil fuel–based energy system and to reduce the greenhouse gases than China. This book examines how China came to occupy that central position. The book may also hold some important lessons for other countries pondering how to gain an advantage in these fast-changing industries during their own energy transitions.
