English

Concrete decarbonization via supplementary cementitious materials is usually quantified per kg of binder. This paper shows analytically that this metric is structurally incomplete: because alternative binders bind less efficiently, meeting a prescribed strength class requires more binder per m³. Inverting Abrams' law yields a closed-form net carbon efficiency governed by three dimensionless descriptors and normalized strength demand, producing an exact break-even grade beyond which substitution becomes counterproductive. No carbon-reduction claim is complete without the concrete grade and confidence level at which it holds.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract

Concrete decarbonization rests on replacing Portland clinker with supplementary cementitious materials, whose benefit is almost universally quantified per kilogram of binder [Habert et al., 2020, Chen et al., 2010]. Here we show analytically that this metric is structurally incomplete. Because alternative binders bind less efficiently, reaching a prescribed strength class requires more binder per cubic meter; inverting Abrams' strength-water law [Abrams, 1918] turns this overdosage penalty into a closed-form net carbon efficiency, governed by three dimensionless material descriptors and by the normalized strength demand. The resulting sustainability frontier contracts monotonically with the strength class, yielding an exact break-even grade beyond which substitution becomes counterproductive. Propagating plant and inventory uncertainty analytically then delivers characteristic efficiencies at 85/95% confidence and an environmental partial safety factor in Eurocode format: at 95% confidence, geopolymers and calcined clay lose about one-fifth of their admissible strength range. No carbon-reduction claim is complete without the concrete grade - and the confidence level -at which it holds
