Electrochemical hydrogen permeation tests on three low-alloy boiler/petrochemical steels (0.06–0.24 wt% C) at 25–80 °C show that quenching generally lowers hydrogen diffusivity, by up to ~7× for A106 Gr.B at 60 °C. Normalizing refines grains but raises diffusivity at 80 °C for A192 and A210 Gr.A1. Arrhenius analysis gives activation energies of 29.5–58.2 kJ/mol, linking composition and microstructure to hydrogen transport kinetics as reference data for hydrogen-service material evaluation.

In the global GX context
As hydrogen and CCUS infrastructure scale under transition-finance-backed projects, material integrity data for hydrogen service underpins asset safety and insurability. This adds quantitative permeation reference data useful for engineering standards and due diligence in hydrogen supply chains.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This study investigates how chemical composition and microstructure govern hydrogen permeation in three low-alloy steels of differing carbon content, ASTM A192 (0.06 wt%), A210 Grade A1 (0.15 wt%), and A106 Grade B (0.24 wt%), used in boiler and petrochemical piping. Although these grades share broadly similar silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur contents, their differing carbon levels drive distinct microstructural evolution during heat treatment. Electrochemical permeation tests, conducted at 25, 60, and 80 °C under as-received, normalized, and quenched conditions, reveal that quenching lowers hydrogen diffusivity relative to the as-received state in most cases, by up to a factor of about seven (A106 Grade B at 60 °C). Quenched A192 has the lowest effective diffusion coefficient ( D eff = 0.3 × 1 0 − 6 cm 2 /s at 25 °C). Normalization refines grain size but, for A192 and A210 Grade A1, increases diffusivity at 80 °C. Among the as-received specimens, the ferritic-pearlitic microstructure of A106 Grade B yields the highest diffusivity (22.4 × 10 −6 cm 2 /s at 80 °C). Arrhenius analysis is consistent with thermally activated hydrogen transport in all conditions, with activation energies ranging from 29.5 to 58.2 kJ/mol. These findings establish quantitative links between composition, microstructural state, and hydrogen transport kinetics, providing reference data for material evaluation in hydrogen-containing environments. The implications for hydrogen embrittlement are discussed in the context of permeation behavior rather than direct mechanical testing.
