English

This chapter argues that a new paradigm, Carbon Offsets 2.0, is emerging to restore integrity after trust crises over additionality, permanence, and transparency. It rests on three pillars: trust via science-based standards (Core Carbon Principles) and FPIC; transparency via satellites, AI, and blockchain registries; and real impact shifting from cheap avoidance to durable carbon removal with verifiable co-benefits. It also examines next-generation nature-based and technological removal methods and new financing such as advance market commitments.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Globally, this speaks directly to ISSB/CSRD disclosure integrity, VCMI and ICVCM claims guidance, and the shift toward durable CDR under Article 6 and net-zero transition finance. It offers a framework for evaluating offset quality amid tightening greenwashing scrutiny.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Carbon offsetting was a well-intended but ill-fated model, ravaged by a lack of trust crisis stemming from methodological vices—additionality, permanence, and transparency—which has led to accusations of greenwashing and undermined the effectiveness of the entire procedure. This chapter suggests that a new paradigm, Carbon Offsets 2.0, is being formed, which is based on three non-negotiable pillars to reclaim integrity and impact. The first pillar, trust, is designed with the help of science-based standards such as the Core Carbon Principles and effective community involvement with the help of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. The second is transparency which is a digital revolution of satellites monitoring, AI and blockchain to establish an unchangeable, open registry of all credits. The third pillar, Real Impact, will change the market dynamics associated with low-cost avoidance to high-durability carbon dioxide removal and initiatives that provide verifiable co-benefits. The chapter discusses the shifting implement tools of next-generation approaches, such as improved nature-based solutions or technological carbon removal and the new financing, including the advance market commitment, that can be used to support them.
