In the global GX context
This paper contributes to the global hydrogen economy by evaluating produced water as a feedstock, a novel angle for circular economy and industrial symbiosis. Its integration of 45V tax credit tiers and GREET-based carbon intensity accounting offers a template for policy-linked LCOH analysis relevant to ISSB and transition finance discussions.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract We present a screening-level techno-economic framework for producing low-carbon hydrogen from oilfield produced water (PW) via water electrolysis across the seven major U.S. oil and gas basins. It couples a piecewise water-treatment cost function, a side-by-side proton exchange membrane (PEM) and alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) module, a discounted-cash-flow levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) calculation, and a 45VH2-GREET-aligned carbon-intensity accounting that auto-assigns the §45V tax-credit tier. A Sobol decomposition shows electricity price dominates LCOH variance overall (S1 = 0.79), but electrolyzer CAPEX leads in the renewable regime (S1 = 0.35). A 10,000-iteration Monte Carlo campaign yields P (LCOH ≤ $5/kg) of 47–77% for PEM under a renewable PPA but ≥99.8% for AWE; under grid power, viability collapses to ≈0% for PEM and 3–17% for AWE. AWE delivers ∼$1.40/kg lower LCOH than PEM. Despite a 10× treatment-cost spread, the Niobrara-to-Bakken LCOH increment is $0.49/kg, since each kg H2 needs roughly 9–11 L of feedwater. With §45V, favorable renewable projects reach $2.02/kg (AWE) or $3.42/kg (PEM). These results indicate that electricity procurement, not water chemistry, governs the viability of produced-water hydrogen, with AWE under a renewable PPA the most bankable pathway.
