English
This study proposes a novel approach for establishing urban mitigation pathways based on sectoral CO2 emissions and urban area. Applied to 1200 urban areas worldwide, it shows that emissions of 4.73 GtCO2 in 2022 could be reduced to 0.62-0.97 GtCO2 by 2050 under 1.5°C-aligned scenarios. Major reductions are identified in cities like Tokyo, Shanghai, and Los Angeles, with uncertainty assessed via Monte Carlo simulations.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Urban infrastructure that covers multiple sectors provides an opportunity to support climate change mitigation. This research work provides a new approach for establishing urban mitigation pathways based on the territorial carbon dioxide emissions of urban infrastructure per sector and urban area. The approach is applied to 1200 urban areas worldwide with 4.73 GtCO 2 of total emissions from the energy, transport, residential, industry, waste, and agriculture sectors located within their boundaries in the reference year of 2022, averaging 2.32 tCO 2 per capita. In the baseline, total emissions could rise to 5.61 GtCO 2 in 2050. Alternatively, three scenarios represent pathways that are aligned with climate futures that limit global warming to 1.5 °C with no or limited overshoot. The alternative scenarios involve an emphasis on renewable energy, low demand, and shifting pathways and lead to 0.93 GtCO 2 , 0.62 GtCO 2 , or 0.97 GtCO 2 in 2050, respectively. Such urban areas as Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, and Guangzhou involve some of the largest reductions in one or more sectors between 2025 and 2035, reaching up to 30.56 MtCO 2 and 53.33 MtCO 2 of reductions in the energy and industry sectors, respectively. Simulated values based on 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations indicate a range of 0.57 – 1.05 GtCO 2 in 2050 for the total emissions in the alternative scenarios. The results indicate that the 1200 urban areas hold numerous possibilities for decarbonising urban infrastructure within and across multiple sectors, underscoring their roles for the effective mitigation of climate change.
