This review examines carbon capture and storage (CCS) through the linked dimensions of stakeholder perceptions, corporate adoption, implementation challenges, strategic responses, and sustainability implications. It aims to provide an integrated understanding of CCS as not only a technological mitigation option but also a socio-technical, organisational, and governance issue. A comprehensive review approach was adopted to synthesize relevant literature from major academic databases and institutional sources. The selected studies were screened and organised thematically around key areas, including conceptual foundations, stakeholder perceptions, adoption drivers and barriers, implementation constraints, and long-term sustainability relevance. The review shows that CCS occupies a complex position in climate mitigation and industrial decarbonization. Stakeholder acceptance is shaped by trust, risk perception, legitimacy, and communication, while corporate adoption depends on policy support, economic incentives, technological readiness, and organisational capabilities. Implementation remains constrained by technical, financial, regulatory, legal, and coordination barriers. At the same time, CCS presents important opportunities for hard-to-abate sectors and net-zero transitions, although concerns remain regarding cost, overreliance, public acceptance, and delayed structural change. The findings suggest that the future of CCS depends on its integration into broader sustainability transitions supported by credible governance, viable business models, and inclusive stakeholder engagement. CCS should therefore be understood as one component of a wider low-carbon transformation rather than a stand-alone climate solution.
