English
This paper critically examines the failure of CCS/CCUS and energy transition to meet expectations over the past two decades, discussing technical and financial reasons. It highlights issues with Scope 1-2-3 classification for emissions and advocates for phasing out oil and gas or chemically fixing CO2 at the point of emission.

In the global GX context
This paper offers a skeptical perspective on CCS/CCUS and energy transition, relevant to global debates on net-zero pathways. It raises questions about the reliance on CCS in corporate climate strategies and the role of Scope 3 accounting.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Energy Transition are needed to achieve Net Zero by 2050, but for the past two decades CCS accounts for only 0.1% of some 40 billion tonnes of CO2 emitted globally and Energy Transition through renewables is a small fraction of the total energy production. Reasons for that are discussed, alternatives are suggested, and the disastrous effects on oil and gas production are examined. The projects for CCS and CCUS are briefly described and the lack of success for both technological and financial reasons is discussed. The problems introduced by assigning Scopes 1, 2, and 3 to emissions are underlined. Cost of CO2 captured by different methods is compared showing that Direct Air Capture, being employed industrially, is the most expensive. Reasons for pursuing that are mentioned. A careful survey of CCS/CCUS and Energy Transition shows that project success depends strongly on the presence of incentives in various forms, over the long term. Given that CCS/CCUS and Energy Transition have failed to live up to expectations, the remedies are: 1. to phase out oil and gas completely, consequences of which are discussed; and 2. to devise ways to "fix" the CO2 chemically or utilize it completely as it is emitted.
