This paper builds an optimized dispatch model for an integrated energy system coupling electricity, hydrogen, and ammonia. It integrates ammonia-coal co-firing, hydrogen-natural gas co-firing, CCS, and multi-energy storage, testing four scenarios at an industrial park in Northwest China. The hydrogen-ammonia synergy scenario cuts total cost by 11.0% while fully integrating wind and solar, showing ammonia as a stable, efficient hydrogen carrier that overcomes storage bottlenecks.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract To support the low-carbon transition of Integrated Energy Systems (IES) under the ‘Dual Carbon’ goals, and to address the shortcomings of existing research—which analyses ammonia-coal co-firing units and hydrogen-blended gas turbines as independent technical pathways without considering synergistic optimisation—this paper constructs an optimised dispatch model for an integrated energy system coupling electricity, hydrogen and ammonia. The model integrates ammonia-coal co-firing, hydrogen-natural gas co-firing, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, and multi-energy storage devices for electricity, heat, cooling, hydrogen and ammonia. It aims to minimise total intraday operating costs whilst balancing renewable energy integration and low-carbon emission constraints. A comprehensive energy system in a certain industrial park in Northwest China was selected as the study subject. Four typical operating scenarios were established, and the model was solved using a mixed-integer quadratic constraints programming method. The results indicate that the system exhibits optimal overall performance under the hydrogen-ammonia synergy scenario, with total costs reduced by 11.0% compared to the baseline scenario, whilst achieving full integration of wind and solar resources. Ammonia, as a highly efficient and stable carrier for hydrogen, effectively overcomes the technical bottlenecks of low energy density and high costs associated with hydrogen storage. This study provides theoretical support and technical guidance for the low-carbon coordinated dispatch of integrated energy systems within the context of the ‘dual carbon’ goals.
