English

This study designs a novel exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) mixer for industrial gas turbines with CCS, using CFD (STAR-CCM+ with RANS turbulence models) to model multi-component turbulent mixing. Through iterative design, a unique mixer box with many jets and small vortices achieves intensive mixing in a short distance, yielding uniform flow at the compressor inlet. A US patent was granted in 2024, and preliminary tests on Solar's Taurus 60 engine confirmed feasibility.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) with a carbon capture and sequestration/storage (CCS) unit for industrial gas turbines is one of the widely explored options towards reducing the harmful impact of greenhouse gas emission on the environment. In order to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of carbon capture (CO2), properly cooled exhaust gas is recirculated back into the compressor inlet system. This paper presents aero design of a novel EGR mixer using CFD analysis. To prevent in-sufficient mixing of the recirculated exhaust (with high CO2 concentration) with the fresh air flow, different options were explored. The design process started from a simple dump of exhaust gas into the inlet duct of fresh air, through multiple iterations, to the final design of a unique EGR mixer box which features many jets and small vortices for intensive mixing in a short distance. The exhaust and fresh air flows have been modeled as turbulent flows of multi-component gas (N2, O2, CO2, H2O …) using the CFD code STAR-CCM+ with RANS turbulence models. The final design of EGR mixer box was shown to provide very effective mixing of re-circulated exhaust gas with fresh air in a small space, leading to fairly uniform flow at the compressor inlet. A patent was granted to this novel EGR mixer box by USA patent office in early 2024. Preliminary tests using Solar’s Taurus 60 turbine engine confirmed the feasibility of this EGR mixer.
