Using Ruwais LNG (9.6 Mtpa, two trains, Abu Dhabi) as a case, this paper analyzes the shift from combustion-based to clean-power electrified liquefaction. Electric-drive refrigeration removes the largest continuous onsite combustion load, and cited studies indicate >50% GHG reductions versus conventional configurations when supplied by low-emission electricity. It proposes a three-level classification (driver, facility, clean-power electrification) and a bounded framework separating liquefaction Scope 1, facility Scope 1, location- and market-based Scope 2, and lifecycle emissions.

In the global GX context
Electrified liquefaction and the paper's bounded Scope 1/2 accounting framework speak directly to ISSB/CSRD disclosure of purchased LNG and to transition-finance scrutiny of fossil-fuel assets; it offers a transferable template for MRV of low-emission LNG claims.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) production requires substantial refrigeration duty, making liquefaction one of the principal energy-consuming and greenhouse gas-emitting stages of the LNG supply chain. LNG facilities have historically employed several energy architectures, including direct gas-turbine-driven compressors, steam-turbine-driven compressors supplied through fuel-fired steam systems, captive power generation and hybrid utility configurations. Although these arrangements have supported reliable commercial-scale production, they remain dependent on onsite fuel combustion and associated energy-conversion losses. This paper examines the transition from combustion-based LNG energy systems to clean-power electrified liquefaction through the case study of Ruwais LNG, a two-train development with a combined production capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per annum, located in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Based on publicly available information, the project employs electric-driven refrigeration systems and is designed to operate using clean electricity. Publicly available references identify Ruwais LNG as a clean-power LNG development comprising two electric-drive liquefaction trains [29-32]. The assessment compares the energy-conversion, emissions and operational characteristics of combustion-based and clean-power electrified LNG architectures. Electrification restructures the facility energy system by reducing the largest continuous combustion requirement associated with liquefaction, separating refrigeration performance from onsite fuel conversion and supplying compressor shaft power through electricity with verified clean-energy attributes. Published studies indicate that refrigeration compression and associated power systems account for a substantial proportion of operational emissions in conventional LNG facilities, and that electrified liquefaction supplied by low-emissions electricity can deliver greenhouse gas reductions of more than 50% relative to conventional configurations under comparable operating conditions and assumptions [5,17-20]. Residual emissions from flaring, fugitive releases, emergency equipment and non-routine events remain within the facility inventory. The paper introduces a three-level classification comprising driver electrification, facility electrification and clean-power electrification. It also establishes a clearly bounded framework separating liquefaction-driver Scope 1 abatement, total facility Scope 1 emissions, location-based and market-based Scope 2 emissions, and lifecycle LNG emissions. For ADNOC Gas, the project illustrates the potential to combine reduced liquefaction-related emissions with commercial-scale LNG capacity, clean-power integration and robust carbon-accounting practices. For the global LNG industry, the case provides a transferable framework integrating process engineering, electrical performance, environmental-attribute management and greenhouse gas monitoring, reporting and verification.
