English

This study examines barriers to carbon credit verification for solar PV projects in Nigeria—data inaccuracy, high verification costs, limited transparency, and weak institutional capacity. It proposes an ICT-driven digital MRV system combining IoT, blockchain, and cloud platforms, assessed through case studies of operating PV programs. Findings suggest digital MRV can improve data trustworthiness, cut transaction costs, and enable broader participation in global carbon markets.

In the global GX context

Digital MRV for carbon credits speaks directly to Article 6 implementation and integrity concerns under voluntary carbon markets (ICVCM/CORSIA). It offers a Global South perspective on verification infrastructure that complements ISSB/CSRD-adjacent assurance debates.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The feasibility of carbon credits for solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in Nigeria is faced with major setbacks, including data inaccuracy, high verification costs, limited transparency, and inadequate institutional capacity. These challenges affect project developers from adequately examining carbon markets and undermine the reliability of emissions reduction claims. This study analyzes an ICT-driven method to manage these barriers, emphasizing on the mobilization of digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems to suit the Nigerian context. By incorporating Internet of Things (IoT) devices, blockchain technology, and cloud-based platforms, the suggested solution improves data trustworthiness, decreases transaction fees, and impacts stakeholder trust. Case studies of already operating solar PV programs in Nigeria are assessed to find the feasibility and effect of such technological solutions. The study concluded that capitalizing on ICT can tremendously refine carbon credit verification processes, improve scalability of renewable energy (RE) projects, and allow wider inclusion in global carbon markets. Recommendations are suggested for policymakers, builders, and investors to aid the use of ICT tools for sustainable carbon finance in Nigeria’s energy sector.
