English

Dead-burned MgO was used as a temperature-activated phase regulator in ferronickel-slag geopolymers, achieving refractoriness of 1510°C without sintering. The study reveals a sequential mechanism of dehydration, solid-state sintering with forsterite crystallization, and densification. Cradle-to-gate GWP of 414 kg CO2-eq/t is 23–35% of conventional sintered refractory bricks, though higher than the FNS-G baseline due to MgO production.

In the global GX context

Adds to the global evidence base on industrial by-product valorization and low-carbon refractory materials, relevant to Scope 3 industrial decarbonization and circular-economy claims under CSRD/ISSB. The cradle-to-gate LCA offers a comparable carbon benchmark for construction and metallurgical materials.

📄 Abstract(原文)

ABSTRACT Ferronickel‐slag geopolymers (FNS‐G) provide a sintering‐free route to refractory materials, but their service temperature is limited by the thermal instability of alkali aluminosilicate gels and Fe‐bearing, low‐melting phases. Here, dead‐burned MgO (D‐MgO) was used as a temperature‐activated phase regulator to develop MgO‐modified FNS‐G (M‐FNS‐G). A Box–Behnken response‐surface design balanced room‐temperature compressive strength against linear shrinkage. The optimized M‐FNS‐G (15% D‐MgO, 5% activator, and an activator modulus of 1.6) reached a refractoriness of 1510°C and a load‐softening temperature of 1455°C. Temperature‐resolved XRD, TG–FTIR, BSE–EDS, XPS, and MIP analyses revealed a sequential mechanism: dehydration‐induced pore development below 1000°C, solid‐state sintering and Mg‐silicate crystallization at 1000–1200°C, and a densification regime accompanied by rapid shrinkage and localized surface melting above 1200°C. D‐MgO was progressively consumed to form high‐melting forsterite, with the forsterite fraction among the detected crystalline phases reaching 89.56% at 1400°C. The cradle‐to‐gate global warming potential was 414 kg CO 2 ‐eq t −1 , corresponding to 23%–35% of that reported for conventional sintered aluminosilicate refractory bricks, although it exceeded the FNS‐G baseline because of MgO production. These results identify D‐MgO as a temperature‐activated phase‐engineering agent and quantify the performance–carbon trade‐off of this sintering‐free refractory system.
