English

This study assesses tree biomass and carbon stock in an urban green space in Bengkulu, Indonesia. Using non-destructive allometric methods, 508 trees were inventoried, yielding an estimated carbon stock of 297.06 tons (83.09 t/ha). Hevea brasiliensis was the main contributor, highlighting the role of species diversity and high-biomass trees in carbon sequestration.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Urban green spaces play a critical role in mitigating climate change by acting as carbon sinks and supporting biodiversity. This study aimed to assess tree biomass and carbon stock in Taman Remaja Bengkulu, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, and to evaluate its contribution to urban ecosystem services. A complete inventory of trees was conducted using a non-destructive allometric method to estimate biomass and carbon storage. A total of 508 individuals representing 30 species were recorded across a 3,575 m² area. The total biomass was calculated at 632.04 tons, with an estimated carbon stock of 297.06 tons, equivalent to 83.09 tons/ha. Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) was the primary contributor, followed by Casuarina equisetifolia and Swietenia macrophylla. The results indicate that species diversity, combined with high-biomass and long-lived species, enhances carbon sequestration potential and ecological resilience. This study highlights the significant role of urban green spaces in supporting climate change mitigation strategies and underscores the need for sustainable management practices to maximize their ecological and social benefits.
